About Us

We are a group of volunteers made up of horse riders, walkers and cyclists who are passionate advocates for access to the countryside and exploring the rich heritage of our local area. We came together as part of project within the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership funded by the National Lottery Heritage fund. This was one of 20 partnership projects.

Our project aims were to research and survey old highways and packhorse routes throughout the Sheffield 'lakeland' area. We undertook to tell the story of the heritage of the old highways by producing a pack of guided ride leaflets, a History booklet, a booklet of walks, the Sheffield Lakeland Loop Ride Map and this website. We have also produced two designs of way marker, one for the guided ‘Heritage’ rides and one for the Sheffield Lakeland Loop and also some restoration and access improvement works have been funded by our project.

As of 31st December 2023 the project formally came to an end but we will continue our work. There is still a lot to discover about the ancient routes that cross our area and this research may help us in our quest to extend, improve and protect public access. If you are keen to be part of this work then please get in touch via our 'Contacts' page.
